Promotieonderzoek “Managing Technological Discontinuities – Banks’ Responses to Fintech”

Managing Technological Discontinuities – Banks’ Responses to Fintech

Despite their continuing innovation efforts, radical advances in financial technology (fintech) pose a serious threat to traditional banks. Experience from other industries clearly indicates that discontinuous change threatens the competitive position and very existence of incumbents. In contrast to small-scale, nimble fintech start-ups, large market leaders have everything to lose from ignoring technological discontinuities. Incumbents pursuing fintech have to juggle their new ventures in addition to their core-business operations and legacy systems. This balancing act has manifold implications.

Consequently, I propose a study of banks’ attention to and adoption of fintech – a technological discontinuity. Examining this matter from a strategic leadership perspective, I seek to shed light on why incumbents vary in their propensity to pursue TDs. In particular, how audience engagement – external attention and opportunity beliefs, alignment of top and middle management, and management innovation impact the effect of managerial attention on the adoption of TDs.
